TEAM RED BULL READYING TO RACE

Source: Toyota.com
When three teams announced in January they would field Toyota Camrys in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series beginning with the 2007 season-opening Daytona 500, two of the teams boasted a wealth of NASCAR experience -- Bill Davis Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing. The third -- Team Red Bull -- was a brand new organization.

Since that announcement, Team Red Bull has been quietly working at a furious pace to get ready for next year and the debut of the Camry. General Manager Marty Gaunt has been leading the team's efforts to have everything in place for a pair of Team Red Bull Camrys next season.

The team's initial move was to find a race shop, and Team Red Bull has moved into the former Penske Racing South shop in Mooresville, N.C. After opening the doors and turning on the lights at the new facility, Gaunt began searching for the right personnel for the team, including key management positions.

"The shop is coming along," says Gaunt. "We've finished most of the construction on the building -- including giving it what I call a 'Red Bull makeover.' Right now, we have 40 people currently working at the shop. The group we've put together is a good mix of people -- some from within the racing industry, a few recent technical school graduates and even people with no previous racing experience. We also have many of our core management group already in place."

Key positions that have been filled at Team Red Bull include Elton Sawyer as the team's Director of Competition, John Probst as Technical Director and Randy Cox as Research & Development Director.

"Everything we're doing right now is aimed at getting us ready for next year," explains Gaunt, who previously served as general manager of Red Horse Racing in the Craftsman Truck Series. "We have people hanging bodies on some of the current Cup car models and we plan to run three races at the end of this year, although it won't be in a Red Bull-sponsored car.

"The reason we're running a few races this year is to get the team up and running and to develop some team chemistry. We want to get experience going through all the activities that take place during a race weekend. Then, when we get to Daytona in February we'll know what it takes to get a race car through inspection, we'll know that we have all the necessary tools and people, and we'll have a group where all the personalities we have in place match up."

In addition to his experience building and managing Red Horse Racing, Gaunt served as general manager for a pair of NASCAR Cup teams, Kranefuss-Haas Racing and Penske-Kranefuss Racing, as well as a Busch Series team with Elton Sawyer as the driver. In 2004, Red Horse Racing ran the Toyota Tundra in the Craftsman Truck Series to capture one win and two poles with driver Brandon Whitt.

Although Team Red Bull has begun the building process, there is still plenty of work to accomplish.

"We're taking it one day at a time, and one piece at a time," says Gaunt. "Building a new race team has been everything I expected. There haven't been many surprises. Although, sometimes I go home for dinner and look at the clock and realize it's nine at night -- and I just can't believe it."
